GEO + AI + WordPress.

When AI hit the shelves and everyone was lining up to grab their piece of DIY “I’m a Citizen Developer” genius, the angsties certainly took over this little WordPress lover.

Then I started to have a play.

And the more I played, the more I loved what I was experiencing.

Scary, no more.

Not so much the AI-generated written content – if I see the AI-generated news blog phrase ‘we are thrilled’ one more time…

But the way I could code up a snippet of code or troubleshoot a PHP fatal error on a site made me feel like I had superpowers.

Stuff that used to cost me motzas on codeable.io to get fixed, I could now do myself.

Nutttts!

Back to traditional SEO/WordPress.

If you’re loving yourself a bit of GPT shopping or researching, you’ll see how important it is for businesses to position themselves to be served up by the GPT gods as the best option for both.

So here it is.

Another acronym to add to your already-overstuffed digital glossary—GEO – Generative Engine Optimisation.

First, let’s kill the “WordPress is dead” gossip.

Yes, AI can throw up a slick website in under two minutes, but most Aussie businesses still want a platform they can own, control, and hand over to staff without anyone having to moonlight as a Python developer.

For me, that’s where WordPress still has life—and with AI in the mix, it’s faster, wiser, and far less painful to run.

SEO Is Out. GEO Is In?

SEO was/is about sucking up to Google’s crawlers.

GEO—Generative Engine Optimisation—is about making your content a no-brainer to the AIs that answer people’s questions: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews.

If your content isn’t structured for them, you won’t even get a seat at the table.

TBh I have NFI if I’m doing things right, right here yet.

AI ya killing meeeee!

What GEO Means in Practice, I think…

  • Put the clear, plain-English answer right at the top.
  • Write like a human, but structure it so robots can parse it fast.
  • Use schema—FAQ, How-To, Article—to label your content.
  • Show authority with real bios, dates, and citations.
  • Optimise for more than text: images, video transcripts, audio tags.
  • Post where the models scrape: LinkedIn, Reddit, Substack , X?(farrrrrk -no way)
  • Keep it brief and navigable—quick links, FAQs, summaries.
  • Refresh content often; AI tools favour the latest version.

SEO is still essential I’d say, or at least the human-written content part of it is—pageSpeed scores, etc.

GPTs still need to feed off web search data for relevancy so your website (and hence WordPress) is still essential.

AI’s Role in Supercharging WordPress

  • AI content drafting for posts, headlines, and product blurbs.
  • Chatbots trained on your site’s FAQs.
  • Instant layouts via Elementor AI or Divi AI.
  • Code snippets without the Stack Overflow rabbit hole.
  • Real-time SEO and accessibility optimisation.
  • Workflow automation to connect tools and processes.
  • Security monitoring powered by machine learning.

Run all this on performance-first hosting—Cloudways, Kinsta, or Loud Cow’s new offering—so your shiny AI enhancements don’t strangle site speed.

Why This Still Matters

AI-built “instant” sites are pretty nuts, and OMG, don’t get me started on vibe coding apps like Replit, until you’re trapped in their platform, pricing, and feature set.

WordPress with AI keeps the power in your hands…

  • You own the platform.
  • You choose the features.
  • You control the spend.
  • You tap into a massive community for support and ideas.
  • You don’t build an incredible website using DIY vibe coding tools and then suddenly get stuck with a “computer says no” coding issue that you have no idea how to address.

Quick Wins to Start Now

  • Pick one high-value page and rework it for GEO.
  • Add a free-tier AI tool like AI Engine – You can hook up your OPEN AI assistants through this via API
  • Set limits on pay-as-you-go APIs to protect your budget. It adds UP.
  • Test in ChatGPT and Google AI Overview—adjust until you appear.

PLUS. Do this right now – Ask GPT what your business is about.

Since my website has been a landing page for the last 5 years, my output was abysmal. It says I wasn’t trustworthy!

But I ammmmm. I am.

IMHO – WordPress isn’t dying. Like everything else we’re touching right now, it’s evolving with AI capabilities.

Time to rev up the Gogglemobil. GEE. OH. GEO. Jeez, I hope you get that reference!
